What Is an eSIM Card?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that allows a device to connect to a mobile network without a physical SIM card. It is reprogrammable, meaning users can download carrier profiles remotely via a QR code or activation code. eSIMs are built into modern smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.
Unlike a physical SIM, an eSIM cannot be lost, damaged, or swapped incorrectly. It is ideal for international travel because travelers can purchase a local data plan before departure and activate it instantly upon arrival.
How Does eSIM Work for Travel?
- The traveler purchases an eSIM plan online from a provider such as aloSIM.
- The provider emails a QR code and step-by-step activation instructions.
- The traveler scans the QR code on their eSIM-compatible device.
- The device downloads the carrier profile and installs it as a secondary or primary data plan.
- Upon arrival at the destination, the traveler enables data roaming on the eSIM profile and connects to a local network.
What Is aloSIM?
aloSIM is an eSIM marketplace that sells prepaid data plans for over 190 countries and regions. Travelers purchase data packages by destination, duration, and data allowance. aloSIM does not require a contract, SIM card, or credit check.
aloSIM plans are data-only. For voice calls and SMS, travelers can use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or pair their eSIM with a service like Hushed for a secondary phone number.
eSIM vs. Hotspot: What Is the Difference?
A mobile hotspot is a separate physical device that creates a WiFi network using a local SIM card or built-in modem. It requires charging, carrying an extra device, and often has shorter battery life than a phone.
An eSIM, by contrast, is built directly into the traveler's phone. It uses the phone's existing battery, antenna, and interface. There is no extra device to manage, no battery to monitor, and the phone connects directly to cellular towers for better coverage than a hotspot's WiFi range.
For a student traveling alone, an eSIM is generally safer and more convenient than a hotspot because it removes the risk of losing a separate device and ensures the phone itself always has data for maps, rideshare apps, and emergency calls.
eSIM Compatibility by Device

- Samsung Galaxy: S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, Z Flip, Z Fold series, and select A-series models.

Recommended eSIM Plan for Italy (Study Abroad)
For a 4-week study abroad program in Italy, we recommend the aloSIM Italy 10GB / 30 Day plan at approximately $18. This provides 333MB per day, which is sufficient for messaging, maps, social media, and occasional video calls over WiFi.
If the student plans to travel to other EU countries on weekends, consider the aloSIM Europe regional plan which covers 30+ countries under a single eSIM profile.
