If your child is studying abroad in Italy this semester or summer, connectivity is probably one of your top concerns. This guide explains everything in plain language — no tech jargon.
The Situation
Your child's US phone plan doesn't work in Italy (or it works at $10-15/day, which adds up to $300-450/month). They need a local data plan.
The Solution: eSIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into their phone. Instead of a physical card, it's a QR code they scan to activate a local Italian data plan. Their US number still works for calls and texts — the eSIM just handles internet data.
What Plan Should They Get?
For a semester (3-4 months): 20GB / 30-day plan, renewed monthly (~$30/month)
For a summer program (6-8 weeks): 10GB / 30-day plan (~$18)
For a short trip (1-2 weeks): 5GB / 30-day plan (~$12)
Is Their Phone Compatible?
iPhone XR (2018) and newer: Yes
Samsung Galaxy S20+ and newer: Yes
Google Pixel 3 and newer: Yes
Older phones: Probably not — check at esimcardplans.com/device-checker
How to Set It Up
1. Purchase the plan on aloSIM before departure
2. Receive a QR code by email
3. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM
4. Scan the QR code
5. Done — the plan activates when they land in Italy
